Hello, I'm starting with QNAP server and I very disapointed to not been able using Time Machine. The latest firmware version does not introduce this function. Other NAS server from Synology, Western Digital or Buffalo has a native timemachine support. I have still 2 weeks to return back to the dealer so any update on the timing to have a suitable firmware with timemachine is welcome.
I'm currently indicating on Mac forum to not purchase QNAP because they are not focused on this platform so any feedback is welcome Xavier. Xvil wrote:I'm currently indicating on Mac forum to not purchase QNAP because they are not focused on this platform so any feedback is welcome You might want to do some more research before posting negative reviews based on faulty expectations on your part. I'm currently using a QNAP TS-509 with Time Machine over iSCSI just fine.
I'm using it on multiple Macs with multiple iSCSI targets, actually. No problems whatsoever. It's very fast over GigE and works perfectly. I apologize if the tone of this reply sounded too harsh, but please, RTFM. I didn't want to hurt someone and I appologize for the misunderstanding of my tone.
I choose this QNAP because of the very good specification, the dealer indicated that the time machine will be native in the next firme ware update which was confirmed on this forum. Based on this point I purchased this device. Now, I have seen that the fireware may not be update in the next future so I'm considering returning back my TS119 because backup was the main reason I took it.
I parallel, in Mac new website there was the information and discussion that Western Digital now support TM, the forum admin request a list of peoples experience on NAS hard drive and TM. I was the only that had a QNAP whichdoesn't support TM, other manufacturer was ok. So I confirmed on this Forum and dealer web site that TM is not supported unless specific procedure. It was facts, nothing negative. In conclusion, I like the TS-119 which is for me the best one, the but a significant part of my usage is impossible, I'm just asking feedback about potential timing for a new Firmeware that may support TM; if it is still planned and timing acceptable I will keep it.

Concerning ISCSI target mode, I read that it is slow and may subjects to error. I addition you have to create a dedicated space for the drive, I may have to deeper investigate (DLNA access to this partition, TM usage, number of backup and restore.) Sorry again for the direct message I may have sent, probably the language (I'm french).
Best regards. Xavier PS: what means 'but please, RTFM.' My TS-109 II Pro works great with Time Machine with little/no tweaking. I turned on AFP I created a share for TimeMachine I setup a user to be used with TimeMachine with a 300GB Quota I created a file in the TimeMachine share '.com.apple.timemachine.supported' without the quotes -This file exists on time capsules as well I mounted it using /TimeMachine entered the username and password I setup above I went and told time machine to use it. It created the sparsebundle just as it would my time capsule. I can tell you the only difference in the setup on my mac was that I had to mount it with the username and password. My time capusle only asked for a password.

Once done Time Machine works like a dream. Full automated restore works right from the install DVD (I assume AFP works better than SMB for this) -XC.
